"Confederates Once, Americans Twice" is Hood descendant’s topic of April Civil War Round Table

The Franklin Civil War Round Table will present Stephen “Sam” Hood on Sunday, April 14th at Carnton’s Fleming Center in Franklin.

His presentation deals with the post war contributions of Southern officers in “Confederates Once, Americans Twice:  Former Confederates and the Building of Postwar America.”

Hood, a descendant and vigorous defender of Army of Tennessee General John Bell Hood, a few years ago discovered a cache of formerly unknown Hood papers stored in the closet of a direct descendant. These papers, including correspondence with a “who’s who” of the Confederate high command, post-war letters, medical logs and other priceless documents, shed a new light on the embattled Army of Tennessee commander.

In 2013 at the Franklin Round Table Hood discussed his book, The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of a Confederate General, which dealt with some  formerly unknown details about Hood’s performance in the 1864 Tennessee campaign.

In this latest work, Hood will share the hundreds of schools, business, medical facilities and more built in large part from contributions and skills of former Confederate officers.  He will share a sampling of his next book that will present a fascinating look back at the years following the Civil War.

Sam Hood lives in Myrtle Beach and is a graduate of Marshall University, a retired building contractor and a Marine Corps veteran. He has served on various historical boards including Confederate Memorial Hall in New Orleans and the Blue and Gray Educational Society. Hood’s leadership was critical for Memorial Hall in the months following Hurricane Katrina.

This is event is free to the public and begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, at the Carnton historic site just south of downtown Franklin. The public is invited.
